The rate of Pasadenans over the minimum eligible age of 12 who have received at least one COVID-19 vaccine dose increased to 97% as of Tuesday, officials said.

The figure represented 84% of the total city population, when including those not yet eligible to receive a shot, according to Pasadena Public Health Department and U.S. Census data.

The rate of fully vaccinated residents reached 90.5%, city data shows.

Five infections were detected in Pasadena on Tuesday, which placed the pandemic total at 13,480 confirmed cases of the virus, according to the PPHD.

The death toll remained at 363, with no fatalities reported since Oct. 6.

Over the prior week, an average of 10.4 infections were detected in the city daily.

Pasadena Unified School District officials reported six infections among students and one involving a staff member over the prior week.

At Huntington Hospital, officials listed 11 admitted COVID-19 patients, including two being treated in intensive care units.

Ten of the 11 hospitalized patients, including both of those in intensive care, were unvaccinated, according to hospital data.

Public health officials at the county level reported 827 infections and 20 deaths on Tuesday, raising the totals to 1,486,614 COVID-19 cases and 26,572 fatalities.

Just under 630 patients were being treated for the virus in hospitals, according to the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health. Twenty-seven percent of them were being treated in intensive care units.

Wednesday’s daily test positivity rate was 0.9%, the agency said in a written statement.

After approving Moderna and Johnson & Johnson booster shots for select populations last week, county health officials were also making preparations to expand vaccinations to children 5 through 11 years old, pending federal approval, according to L.A. County Director of Public Health Barbara Ferrer.

“After reviewing safety and efficacy data, the FDA’s vaccine advisory panel met today and recommended Pfizer’s COVID-19 vaccine for children 5 to 11, bringing us closer to expanding vaccine access to 900,000 L.A. County children,” she said.

“Fully vaccinated children will be better protected at schools, youth activities, holiday gatherings, celebrations and homes,” Ferrer added. “Once the CDC issues final approval and guidance, the County is prepared to begin offering doses to younger children as early as late next week through our vast network of countywide providers.”

The California Department of Public Health announced 24,563 new cases of COVID-19 across the state on Wednesday, along with 298 fatalities.

In all, state officials documented 4,631,162 infections and 71,182 deaths since the onset of the pandemic.

The statewide weekly positivity rate was measured at 2.1%, according to CDPH data.

As of Tuesday, L.A. County accounted for 32% of California’s COVID-19 infections and 37% of the state’s fatalities.
