Alumni Inspire Students at Bosco Tech National Engineers Week Celebration

Alumni who are now engineers returned to their alma mater, Don Bosco Technical Institute (Bosco Tech), on February 24 to commemorate National Engineers Week. These past graduates provided motivational talks to inspire current students, the majority of whom are considering STEM-related college majors and professions.

Representing such companies as Intel, Boeing, Lockheed Martin, and NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory, the alumni made presentations on topics as diverse as designing the power grid of the future, to engineering the Mars Rover, and developing cloud data storage. Students selected the presentations of their choice and asked questions of the speakers about their companies, current positions, and university studies.

“When alumni return to share their advice and their stories, it really is a testament to how Bosco Tech has prepared those who once were in our shoes,” said current senior Everson Cruz, who plans to major in aerospace engineering at the university level this fall. “It gives us students a unique exposure, listening to engineers in the industry we wish to pursue. We were able to ask questions regarding their jobs and barriers they had to overcome to get where they currently are.” Cruz, who is studying Materials Science, Engineering & Technology (MSET), interned at Boeing last summer.

Celebrating its sixtieth year, Bosco Tech is an all-male Catholic high school that combines a rigorous college-preparatory program with a technology-focused education. With a 100 percent college acceptance rate each year, more than 60 percent of Bosco Tech graduates pursue STEM-related majors in their university studies. The innovative curriculum allows students to exceed university admission requirements while completing extensive integrated coursework in one of several applied science and engineering fields.
