Alverno High School Hosts A Successful Beautiful Lengths Event

Alverno High School, in association with several local hairstylists, hosted a successful Pantene’s Beautiful Lengths event on campus that helped to generate more than 500 inches of hair to be donated to help create free wigs for women fighting cancer.

Founded in 2006, Beautiful Lengths is a partnership between hair care giant Pantene and the American Cancer Society, the largest non-profit health organization committed to saving lives from every cancer and improving the quality of life for people facing the disease. The role of Pantene is to help women grow long, strong, beautiful hair and provide the funds to turn this hair into free, real-hair wigs for women with cancer. So far, Pantene has donated 24,000 free real-hair wigs to the American Cancer Society’s wig banks, which distribute wigs to cancer patients across the country.

This event was the fifth time that Alverno students and community members have chopped their locks for this great cause. This year’s event was dedicated to the memory of Susan Tavera, whose daughters Erika and Koko graduated from Alverno in 2010 and 2012. Speaking about her mom’s own cancer experience, Koko encouraged students to think about a woman who they would be willing to donate their hair for and to donate for someone who could not.

By the end of the day more than 60 members of the Alverno community gave over 500 inches of hair that will help give a woman fighting cancer a reason to smile. Every person who donated on Wednesday received a special gift bag, an angel hair pasta lunch, and an “I Donated” badge that showed off their great commitment to the cause.

“In the past ten years, the Alverno community has helped to donate more than 7,500 inches of hair to Locks of Love and Pantene’s Beautiful Lengths,” said Ann Gillick Head of School. “At Alverno, we strive to teach our students the importance of service and the impact that they can make in the lives of others. Today, these students made an enormous impact on a woman they have never even met by donating their hair to help make a wig. We empower each of our young women to be exactly the person she wants to be and I am proud that we have empowered them to be givers.
