Alverno High School to Host Open House for Prospective Families

Alverno High School is pleased to offer an Open House for prospective families on Sunday, November 22 from 1:30 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. All students attending will be entered into a drawing for 3 tickets to KIISFM’s Jingle Ball on Friday, December 4! The Open House will provide prospective students and their families with an opportunity to tour Alverno’s 13-acre campus, visit classrooms, and enjoy the highlights below as well as so much more!

New AP and Honors Courses. During Open House, families will be able to visit each department on campus to learn about the courses and curriculum offered within those subjects. Alverno is pleased to offer a total of 25 AP and Honors Courses in every discipline on campus and continues to add to our curriculum. New AP courses added this year include AP Calculus BC, AP Chemistry, and AP United States Government and Politics. In 2015, sixteen Alverno students were recognized as AP Scholars by the College Board for their outstanding performance on the AP exams in May. Currently, a total of 55 percent of Alverno High School’s student body are currently enrolled in an AP or Honors course.

Partnership with Caltech. Alverno students are currently working with graduate students and professors from Caltech on two different projects. The first, the Solar Energy Activity Laboratory (SEAL Team), provides students with a unique approach to learning chemistry that engages and encourages them to participate in research to solve the global energy crisis. The second project has students working with different types of proteins and bacteria. Recently, Alverno students even created a “chocolate scented” bacteria in the lab!

Speech and Debate Program. Alverno High School is excited to have added both a Speech and Debate Class and Team to our community this year. Students have been working hard to prepare for their first tournament by building vocabulary, public speaking abilities, and persuasion and critical thinking skills.

“Our Town. Our Story.” Alverno’s recent fall production played to sold out crowds at the Sierra Madre Playhouse. The devised version of Thornton Wilder’s “Our Town” integrated stories of Alverno’s own students into the plot and was a phenomenal success.

So Much More! While at Open House, students will also have the opportunity to have questions answered regarding the Admissions process, Scholarships and Financial Aid, and general information regarding life at Alverno. Alverno’s Athletic Department will be on hand to discuss all of the options provided to students through sports while Alverno’s student leaders will highlight our unique government. Campus Ministry will share their Christian Service efforts and how they make a lasting impact on the spiritual nature of the campus. Campus tours will be available throughout the day and students, parents, Board of Trustees, alumnae, and faculty and staff will be available for questions! We hope to see you there!
