The Alverno High School Varsity Volleyball team will compete for the first time in the CIF Finals on Saturday, November 17 against Pomona Catholic. The game will take place at 11:30 a.m. at Cypress College.

The Varsity Jaguars, league champions of the Horizon League, ended their season with a league record of 8-0 and an overall record of 19-3-0 to advance to CIF. After being given a bye in the first round of the CIF preliminaries, the Jaguars defeated San Gabriel Academy 3-0 to advance to the CIF quarter finals. The quarter final game was played on Saturday, November 10 against Excelsior Charter of Victorville where the Jaguars defeated the Excelsior Eagles 3-0. The semifinals on Tuesday, November 13 found the Jaguars pitted against Desert Christian Academy of Lancaster, where they played three very close matches before winning the overall game with a score of 3-0.

Varsity Jaguar members include seniors Raylene Acevedo, Jessica Hamilton, Sydney Hernandez-Barber, Alexandra Overstreet, and Lauren Tunzi; juniors Hayley Barretta, Rachel Cavender, Asia Chapa, and Taylor Valenzuela; sophomores Madison Hernandez-Barber and Alexandria Peterson; and freshman Natalie Hernandez-Barber.

The Jaguars have enjoyed a highly successful season that included 52 sets played, 1,509 attacks, 584 kills, 1,139 serves, and 891 digs. Seniors Jessica Hamilton, Alexandra Overstreet, and Sydney Hernandez-Barber lead the team in attacks, kills, serves, and digs throughout the season. Senior Lauren Tunzi, a strong defensive player, attacked and blocked more than 218 balls for the Jaguars. Finally, Asia Chapa rounds out the top team players with 93 attacks, 237 services including 37 aces, 124 digs, and an astounding 460 assists as the team setter. Although Hamilton, Overstreet, Hernandez-Barber, and Tunzi will be graduating, Chapa will be back on the Jaguar court next season.

“Alverno is thrilled that our volleyball team will be advancing to the CIF Finals for the first time in our recent history,” said Ann Gillick, Head of School. “These young women have worked incredibly hard both on and off the court to get to this point. Although each of them is a talented athlete, each is also a young woman who excels academically, who demonstrates a commitment to her community, and acts like a leader both on and off the court. They are true examples of Alverno’s mission of empowering each young woman to be exactly the person she wants to be.”
