Barnhart School: Pi Day 2016

Ever wonder what “Pi” really is? Well, it is the ratio of a circle’s circumference to its diameter. Pi is a constant number, meaning that for all circles of any size, Pi will be the same. The “Pi” day Celebration is a great tradition – it helps to teach children about the number in a more accessible and fun ways.

During “Pi” Day at Barnhart School, children will have an opportunity to make a “Pi chain” illustrating the no repetitive nature of the number pi. Each digit will be presented in a different color of construction paper with each classroom receiving an assigned list of 100 digits to use in making a segment of the chain. The school will present over 11000 links (middle school students will be assembling 100 links each).

During “Pi” Day, eighth graders will come to the Middle School classrooms and give a brief explanation of what Pi while Middle School students will go into elementary classrooms and read a math related story.

Every student has an opportunity to earn a piece of pie for lunch dessert if they memorize digits of pi! Delicious pizza will be sold for lunch.

Pi day is 3.14 or Monday, March 14 and it’s part of Barnhart’s week-long celebration of S.T.E.A.M. Week (Science. Technology. Engineering. Art. Mathematics.)

The Celebration of Science Open House is 6:00 p.m. Wednesday, March 16.
