Bosco Tech Hosts Math Competition for Middle School Students and Problem-Solving Workshop for Teachers

Don Bosco Technical Institute (Bosco Tech) will host a mathematics competition for fifth through eighth grade students on Saturday, February 6, 2016. The 44th annual event will offer awards for the highest scoring individual and teams.

“The annual competition is a great opportunity for students to test their critical thinking and computational skills,” said Bosco Tech President Xavier Jimenez. “The complex skills involved in solving the questions will play an integral role in future studies of engineering, advanced math, and science.”

During the competition, a workshop will be provided for middle school teachers, examining problems used on the test, to facilitate classroom discussion of the math concepts involved. The workshop will be led by instructional expert and mathematics textbook author Michael Hattar, a longtime Bosco Tech math teacher and professor at Rio Hondo Community College and Mount San Antonio College.

Competition participants must register by Feb. 2 by visiting mathcompetition.eventbrite.com. Space is limited. The cost is $8 per individual and $5 per person for teams of four or more, up to 15. Competition check in begins at 7:45 a.m. and the one-hour test starts at 9 a.m. Free activities will be offered, and food will be available for purchase. An award ceremony will begin at approximately 11 a.m., following the competition.

Bosco Tech is an all-male Catholic high school that combines a rigorous college-preparatory program with a technology-focused education. The innovative science, engineering, technology and math (STEM) curriculum allows students to exceed university admission requirements while completing extensive integrated coursework in one of several applied science and engineering fields. Each year for the past several years, one hundred percent of the graduating class earned college acceptances.
