DebateLA at Hardvard-Westlake

DebateLA, the Harvard-Westlake Institute for Debate and Speech Studies, inaugurated its first summer debate program. The two week flagship program has over 100 students and faculty from all over the US working on debate. While most students are focusing on the Lincoln-Douglas style, DebateLA is offering tracks in World Schools Debate, Parliamentary Debate and Policy Debate. Beginning at 9:00 a.m. on the upper school campus, the program runs until 6:00 p.m. when participants either head home or to the dorms at UCLA.

During the day, participants learn the basics of all forms of debate as well as honing their skills. One student told us, “It was great to have an opportunity to experience and learn the basic things a debater should have. I particularly enjoyed that we learned how to improve on spreading. Personally I’m not a fast speaker and it was great getting some great tips. Also, the lecture was really fun because the two lecturers were really funny and made the experience more enjoyable.”

Do you want to improve your ability to speak and debate? DebateLA is offering two more one-week sessions for local area students. Beginning July 27, the next session will run until July 31 on our middle school campus, followed the next week by a session on the upper school campus.
