Flintridge Sacred Heart Academy’s Swim Team Expects to Repeat as Mission Champions

Flintridge Sacred Heart Academy’s Swim Team started out the season with 64 swimmers, one of the largest teams in school history. Members are well split over the four grades, except for the seniors with 21, most of whom are returnees. To remain on the team, girls commit to at least six practices for varsity and five for JV out of eight practice times each week.

“You are supposed to make a practice a day to keep you fit, but it gives you the freedom to pick your schedule,” said senior Adrienne Ashworth.

Top swimmers are All-Americans Katie Altmayer ’14, Kate Herrill ’16 and Kirsten Vose ’15. Altmayer set five school records last year and committed to Dartmouth College in February. Herrill anchored the winning 200 medley relay at CIF last year, and qualified to attend the U.S World Championship Trials over the summer.

Vose is the defending CIF champion in the 100 breaststroke and was named All-Area Swimmer of the Year in 2013 by the La Cañada Valley Sun, Glendale News-Press and Pasadena Star-News.

Veteran Coach Steve Bergen expects the team to repeat as Mission League champion and to be in the top five at CIF.

“Last year was one of the best in the school history, but I think we will do even better this year, and I think we are probably the best team in the area,” he said.

Both varsity and JV had their first home meets against Notre Dame Academy on March 4.
