Fulfilling a ‘Mission’ Through Quality International Baccalaureate Education

Empowering young minds since 1949, San Gabriel Mission High School (SGMHS) is an International Baccalaureate (IB) World School committed to developing inquiring, knowledgeable, and caring women who aim to make a change in the world through active global citizenship.

SGMHS, which began as a Catholic co-institutional parochial co-ed high school under the direction of the Claretian Fathers and Dominican Sisters of Mission San Jose, received its full accreditation in 1954 and became an exclusive school for girls in September 1971.

Now with a student body consisting of 240 girls and staffed by 18 lay teachers, the school offers college preparatory, AP, IB and general academic courses with a 14:1 teacher-student ratio.

This 2014, San Gabriel Mission High School was granted authorization to implement the prestigious International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme, making it one of the 11 all-girls schools in the country recognized as an IBDP school, and one in 2,641 global schools to earn such an authorization.

The International Baccalaureate is a non-profit educational foundation that offers four highly respected programs of international education which purposes to develop the intellectual, personal, emotional and social skills of students in order to live, learn, and work in a rapidly globalizing world.

These IB Programmes are specifically designed for students aged 3 to 19, to help them develop independent thinking, a drive for their own learning, cultural awareness, and active participation in educational programs that may lead them to the world’s highest ranking universities.

San Gabriel Mission High School is a four-year college preparatory parish high school located on the historical grounds of the fourth Mission of California, which was founded in 1771 by the Franciscan padres.
The school is fully accredited by the Western Catholic Educational Association (WCEA), the Western Association of Schools and colleges (WASC), and the National Catholic Education Association (NCEA) and is affiliated with the Dominican Sisters of Mission San Jose and the Missionary Sons of the Immaculate Heart of Mary.

Its academic departments include English, Fine Arts, Foreign Language, Math, Science, Physical Education, Religion, Social Science, and the IB Programme, which are specifically designed for juniors and seniors. Under the IB Programme, students must complete courses in six areas, including Language A (English) and B (Spanish or French ab initio), Individuals and Societies, Mathematics, Sciences, and The Arts (Film or Visual), and complete a service requirement and epistemology course.
