John Muir High School to Host “Achieve UC” – Selected Due to High UCLA, UC Admission Rates

John Muir High School will host the 2015-2016 kickoff for Achieve UC, an initiative organized by the University of California Office of the President to help students understand how to prepare for higher education and encourage them to get and stay on the path to college. Many of the UC campuses will participate in this systemwide event. John Muir High School was selected as the site for UCLA’s only Achieve UC event for 2015-2016 after more than a third of Muir’s seniors who applied to UCLA in 2014 were admitted, a record 10 admissions out of 29 applicants.

Muir Principal Timothy Sippel will welcome several special guests for the event, including UCLA Vice Chancellor of Student Affairs Janina Montero, UCLA Associate Vice Chancellor of Enrollment Management Youlonda Copeland-Morgan, Pasadena Unified School District Superintendent (PUSD) Superintendent Brian McDonald, ED.d., and City of Pasadena Council Member Tyron Hampton.

“Muir High School is an academic powerhouse: 10 Muir graduates won admission to UCLA last year, one of the premier universities in California and a total 37 Muir students were admitted to UC campuses,” said Superintendent McDonald. “This is a proud moment for the Muir Mustangs and for PUSD, because it validates the work of a team of dedicated teachers and educators, their talented students, and the families who have sought these opportunities for their children. It demonstrates the college-going culture of our district.”

The Achieve UC event will include a school assembly for Muir’s 900 students, targeted college preparation workshops for seniors, and a lunchtime resource fair. John Muir High School is honored to host this Achieve UC event and continue its partnerships with the University of California to help more students prepare to be college and career ready.

Muir High School is organized into themed academies focused on arts, entertainment and media; business and entrepreneurship; and engineering and environmental science. Students take college preparatory courses, participate in project-based learning, and complete internships and other work-based learning opportunities.

Achieve UC will be held on Monday, Nov. 16, 2015, 10:00 a.m. at John Muir High School Auditorium (1905 Lincoln Ave., Pasadena).
