Maranatha Student Commits to Naval Academy

Ben Hynes

After being accepted to both the United States Air Force Academy and Naval Academy, Maranatha High School senior Ben Hynes has made his decision and committed to start his journey at the United States Naval Academy on July 1.

As a kid, Ben dreamed of being an astronaut and thought the Air Force Academy would be a good starting point for that. As he grew, his passion changed slightly and he felt military service as a strong calling on his life. “It’s a great way to serve my country and the people in it,” he says. Ben also feels like he has been blessed with gifts that would be useful in the military. For instance, Ben is known for staying cool under pressure. He is also known for his love of adventure and pushing himself physically.

Ben ultimately chose the Naval Academy over Air Force because it had more job opportunities that interested him and he is excited for the extensive travel opportunities. It also helps that he loves the ocean and is an avid spear fisherman and surfer. When he graduates the academy, he will be an officer in either the Marines or the Navy. He still hopes to be able to fly, possibly as a Marine Corps pilot.

Ben knows that in approximately one month he will be entering a world in Annapolis, Maryland that is very different from Maranatha High School. He has plans to buzz his hair after graduation, so as not to come across as the “typical California surf kid”. Ben hopes to use his leadership skills to be a positive influence on his new brothers in arms.

His History Teacher, Swim Coach, and former Marine himself, Joe Zambrano, notes, “Ben’s natural leadership easily inspires others to follow him. I am confident Mr. Hynes will be able to lead men, lead a unit, and make decisions under pressure. He would certainly be the type of leader I would have been honored to follow in the infantry.”
