According to Rob Wigod, Commissioner of Athletics for CIF Southern Section, “win, lose or draw the effort to always try your best, while respecting your opponent and respecting the game are the core values instilled into today’s student-athletes.” Each year CIF Southern Section presents a small number of schools, coaches, administrators and student athletes with Dr. Jim Staunton Champions for Character Awards. The recipients of these awards exemplify the very finest in sportsmanship, character, integrity and athletics. Mayfield Senior School is honored to be named both a 2013 Champion for Character School as well as to have an Administrator for Character, Athletics Director Lynda Gilbert.

Mayfield athletics have always strove to incorporate the charism of respect which permeates our community as a School of the Holy Child Jesus. Of 573 schools in CIF Southern Section, only about 40 have ever been given the honor of holding a Champion for Character athlete, coach, administrator or being a Champion for Character School. Last fall, Mayfield’s Lauren Joseph ’13 was named a Champion for Character athlete and honored at the same celebratory dinner.

At an awards ceremony on the Queen Mary in Long Beach, Mayfield received this prestigious award. As Rita McBride, Head of School says, “This is a very important honor for Mayfield and I want to express my thanks and appreciation to Lynda Gilbert, Lydia Arguelles, Assistant Athletic Director, Helen Wade, Chair of the Fitness and Wellness department, our athletes, parents and spectators. Your example, participation and commitment ensure the well-being of our students — mind, body and spirit. Your ‘cooperation with grace’ is an inspiration.”

Lynda Gilbert, Athletics Director says, “I am honored and privileged to receive this Champion of Character Award. I believe that good sportsmanship comes from leading with faith, trust, respect and integrity. Our Athletic Department follows Cornelia’s philosophy of “Actions Not Words”. Thank you to all our coaches who believe in me, trust me and coach with sure a caring attitude. Thank you Mayfield for your ongoing support!”

Mayfield sports are competitive and leaders in the Prep League, with the Track Team winning the Prep League Championships and MVP and swimming also winning Prep League Championships in spring 2013. Mayfield’s Water Polo Team received 2012-13 Team Academic Winners by CIF-SS. Currently, the Varsity Volleyball team is rated 80th in the nation and 14th in the state of California. We are looking forward to another exciting, challenging season at Mayfield Senior School.
