October Means Harvest Festival at Mayfield Junior School

Traditions at Mayfield are more than just annual events. Each tradition has a story; each year it continues has special significance to those who participated. Ask any student or young alum about their favorite fall tradition and you will hear – October means Harvest Festival.

Crowded, a bit chaotic, but always a lot of fun, the Harvest Festival is one of the most anticipated events of the year. With an old-fashioned cakewalk, marriage booth, raffle, cotton candy, costume parade, haunted house and Coach Tuttle’s famous hot dogs, there is something for everyone. First held in 1949, over the years the Harvest Festival has been everything from an elaborately themed event with special entertainment such as magicians and a merry-go-round in the 1950s to a Halloween party for children from an inner city parish school in the 1970s. The event we enjoy today is a fundraiser for Reach Out, includes special performances and provides leadership opportunities for our eighth graders who organize and host the entire festival. Although the faces may change with the passing years, the spirit of community surrounding the annual event remains a constant.

Preparations for Harvest Festival 2015 are well underway! The entire eighth grade class has given up their break times to plan, strategize and create the best festival ever. Banners are up, raffle prizes are coming in and various committees are busy planning and promoting the event. The 2015 Harvest Festival will be held on Friday, October 30 from 12 noon to 3:00 p.m. Everyone is welcome!
