Pasadena Unified Spring Parent Workshop Series Launches First Session Covering On-Campus Bullying

The Pasadena Unified School District (PUSD) launches its spring series of parent workshops and classes Thursday, Feb. 5 with a presentation for parents discussing on-campus bullying at 9:00 a.m. in the district’s Family Resource Center, located at 351 S. Hudson Ave. in Pasadena. The workshop is part of PUSD’s Thursday Morning Parent Series, a seven-part program that covers topics such as special education, English learners, navigating the transitions to middle and high school, and college preparation. “Research tells us that a child’s academic achievement is directly related to the parent’s level of involvement in the child’s education,” said Dr. Brian McDonald, PUSD Superintendent. “These events are a great opportunity for parents to get involved and learn about the workings of the school system and what it has to offer so that they, in turn, can support learning and success.”

The district’s parent education program is designed to inform parents about what students are learning in classrooms and the how to partner with schools to support their child’s academic achievement. Some offerings include:

– For parents of entering kindergarten and first grade students, PUSD offers the interactive Ready, Set, Learn! series at Pasadena’s Mothers’ Club and various district elementary schools. The workshops are presented by PUSD teacher specialists trained in delivering differentiated academic and behavior support for students in these crucial early grades.

– To build learning-focused connections between families and schools, PUSD schools are offering teacher-led workshops at their sites this spring. Topics include the Common Core for Parents, Reading Strategies at Home, Family Math Nights, etc.

– To help bridge the digital divide and to build access for parents, Cleveland Elementary School is offering a 6-part computer class for parents using some of the same 21st century technology that students now use in the classroom. Classes start Feb. 4.
