Ribet Academy Football Making History

It has been over 7 years since Ribet Academy has posted a winning record in 11 man football. Since then, Ribet has struggled as a program to field a competitive team. For the last 4 years Ribet Academy competed in 8 man football. In 2010, Ribet Academy had less than 12 men on the varsity roster and was unable to score a touchdown in 8 man for the first part of the season which resulted a winless record.

In 2011, new coach Rob Castaneda and his two sons Tim and Matt took Ribet into 11 man football for the first time in 6 years. Coach Tim Castaneda coaches the line and was on staff at St. Margaret’s with legendary coach Harry Welch. Rob’s other son Matt Castaneda runs the offense and was an all league, all CIF and all San Gabriel Valley quarterback at Los Altos High School and quarterback at Whittier College. Bringing a new style of play and mentality, the Castaneda’s instilled their regime in the program. In 2011, Ribet struggled with a small roster and had no choice but to use freshman to play varsity. Through the pain of losing and posting a 1-9 record, Ribet Academy kept building for the future.

This 2012 season marks a turnaround in Ribet Academy football and athletics. Noted by the Bakersfield News as “the best turnaround story in the state” and by the Los Angeles Times as “signs of a turnaround”, Ribet Academy now stands at number 10 in the CIFSS Northeast Division coaches poll. The Fighting Frogs have had their best start in school history with an outstanding record of 6-1 with their only loss in triple overtime. The roster size has grown to over 22 players and include some key standouts such as sophomore quarterback Alex Camacho, senior Nick Park & senior Yj Choi. Ribet has been on television twice now this season for the So Cal Prep Report and Time Warner Cable’s LaPrepa.

Head coach Rob Castaneda and his two sons have their eyes set on continuing to build Ribet’s program and giving their players lessons for life. Last year, Ribet’s only senior received an athletic scholarship to Dordt College in Iowa for football. For the first time in over 7 years, Ribet has their goal set at winning their first ever league title and enter the CIFSS playoffs. Their last three games of the season are league games at home including this year’s Homecoming game against California Military Institute, Friday, October 19, at 7:00 p.m. Go Frogs!
