San Marino Unified School District to Provide Parental Training and Education on Emerging Mental Health Issues



Don Duranso and Jenifer Lozano (SMUSD School Psychologists) are implementing a training that is part of the Region 11, K-12 Student Mental Health (SMH) Initiative funded through the voter approved proposition 63, the California Mental Health Services Authority (CalMHSA), and the California County Superintendents Educational Services Association. The goal of the project is to provide training and education on emerging mental health issues. The part of the project that SMUSD is involved in is specifically, to target students at risk of depression, bullying, self-injury, and suicide. The focus is on prevention in these four target areas. SMUSD is proud to say that they are one of the 54 districts (and 11 charters) participating in the project.

SMUSD would like to announce that the Parent Training which is specifically designed for parents to help increase awareness regarding warning signs and risk factors contributing to student depression and suicide, as well as those protective factors that help to build resilience against these conditions. As self-injury and bullying are associated with these conditions, these topics will be included in the training.

The next parent training will be held on Wednesday, May 14 from 6:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at Huntington Middle School in the auditorium. SMUSD invites any and all interested parents to join them.
