School Sports Make a Well Rounded Student

Are sports in high school important? For the child who plans on going to college on an athletic scholarship of course the answer is yes. What about for your student? The answer remains the same. Sports in high school are important even if you’re not looking to play in the big leagues.

Sports offer the students the ability to learn how to work as a team, a skill that will follow throughout life. Sports also build a good foundation for a healthy lifestyle and encourage students to learn the all-important balance between school and other responsibilities.

Excelling at a sport or simply mastering a new skill can go a long way to fostering an important sense of self-confidence. High school is stressful and having a positive way to blow off steam is a valuable exercise time as well as a motivator to keep up with studies so grades stay strong enough to play on varsities and junior varsities.

Sports not only build community among students but can also allow parents and community members to get involved. Going to all the games and helping with the concession stands can not only remind your child of how important they are too you but offers immeasurable time spent together.

Granted, some students will never play a sport. Joining other school activities can have the same benefits. Colleges look positively on group sports and clubs on your teen’s college applications. Southwestern Academy in San Marino is one of the many schools in the area that offers a multitude of activities where your child can excel.

Southwestern Academy students have the opportunity to play or help manage soccer, cross country, basketball, baseball, volleyball, golf and track and field. Check out their website to keep up with their sporting events or visit www.southesternacademy.com to learn more.
