Just nine days after winning the Super Bowl, Seattle Seahawks Defensive Passing Game Coordinator Rocky Seto spoke to the entire Maranatha High School student body at a special assembly. As a committed Christian, Coach Seto’s theme was, “Jesus is Better than the Super Bowl,” a perfect fit with the intentionally Christ-centered mission of Maranatha.

The assembly opened with the “Making of a Champion” video (http://www.makingofachampion.org/) which shared about Coach Seto and a number of other Seahawk coaches and players. Then Coach Seto’s local pastor, Reverend Cory Ishida of Evergreen Baptist Church, introduced Rocky.

Coach Seto shared a number of important messages about hard work, using our gifts, and fame. First, he shared what a long road it was to get to the Super Bowl. Excellence does not come without years of hard work. He revealed that Head Coach Carroll emphasizes “effort” and hard work even before technique. Relating that to the Christian faith, he shared, “Jesus is the center of our lives and we need to keep the main thing (Christ), the main thing.” Coach Seto also encouraged students to use their gifts, whatever they may be to honor Christ. He urged students to strive for excellence and use the opportunities and leadership in the world for good.

Finally, he shared a little about fame. On waking up the day after winning the Super Bowl Seto said, “I was exactly the same person.” Even as a young player at USC, Rocky realized that “as great as it was playing for USC, something was missing.” Coach Seto understands that buildings, logos, clothes, and fame are all temporal and his faith in Christ is the one eternal thing in life.

After the Super Bowl, reporters and fans rushed the field to congratulate the winners. What you may not have seen on TV is what Coach Seto and a number of other players did; before speaking with reporters, they met on the 50 yard line and thanked God. Maranatha High School students were grateful to hear this inspiring message of faith and how God is working in the NFL.

Maranatha’s Athletic Director Brian DeHaan said, “Rocky is a ‘San Gabriel kid’ and he has always found a way to give back to the community he comes from. His message of meeting the needs of others by sharing the love of Christ transforms lives and relationships. Maranatha is blessed to have a friend like Rocky who speaks truth into the lives of those he meets. The video showed has been viewed by over a million people worldwide and both Rocky and those featured in the video understand that God gives so we can abundantly proclaim Christ’s love and glory.”
