St. Rita Raiders Win CYO North Region Championship!

This week, in a heart-stopping, come-from-behind victory over the talented Royals of St. Thomas the Apostle of LA, the St. Rita Girls Varsity Basketball team captured, for the first time ever, the CYO North Region Championship!

Lead by co-captain and leading point scorer, Chelle Encinas, and a grand team effort, the lady Raiders emerged victorious, narrowly edging out the Royals with a score of 14-13. It was a low-scoring, defensive battle that see-sawed, with neither team leading by no more than four points at any one time in the game. Late in the second half, the Royals took the lead 8-7 and determinedly refused to relinquish their accomplishment.

As the score climbed to 11-13 in favor of the Royals, all the girls knew it was “do or die!” Fouled while shooting with 2 minutes left, Encinas took the line and sunk 2 for 2 to tie the score. A clutch steal by Kathleen Brady provided the opportunity for the Raiders to score, only to be fouled again. Encinas was sent back to the line with 2.7 seconds left in the game. Missing the first of the two, in front of the anxious crowd, she calmly swished the second, effectively ending the game! The Royals did not have time to take a final cross court shot.

Coach Cyndy Amerio and the lady Raiders now look forward to the final four for the Southern California CYO Championship to be played this weekend.
