The Advent Season at Mayfield Junior School

Advent at Mayfield Junior School is filled with joyful celebrations, wonderful traditions and opportunities to give back to our community. Morning Prayer has special significance these days with the lighting of the Advent wreath each morning. First graders are planning visits to senior living residences to share Christmas carols and holiday memories. Gift gathering for the Adopt- a- Family project is already well underway. For nearly 15 years, MJS School Families led by the 8th graders have participated in the Adopt-a-Family project providing Christmas gifts for the women and children at Good Shepherd Shelter in Los Angeles. On Friday, December 12 the gifts will be blessed at the annual Mothers’ Christmas Luncheon, another wonderful holiday event. Held on campus, the luncheon is an opportunity to honor all mothers as we await the birth of the Holy Child. Each year the 8th graders join their mothers at the luncheon, the seventh graders assist in serving and musical performances by students in grades 4-6 complete the celebration.

Of course it wouldn’t be Christmas without the annual Kindergarten Nativity Play, which will be held on Wednesday, December 10. It is perhaps one of Mayfield’s most beloved Christmas traditions and has been for almost 80 years. This retelling of the Christmas story by the youngest members of the student body has provided countless stories and can easily spark memories for the many alumni who once took the stage as angel, shepherd or king. What surprises will the Class of 2023 have for us this year?

The grand finale of the season is the annual Christmas Concert. This year there will be two concerts. Mayfield is blessed with the opportunity to once again hold the first concert featuring students in grades 3-6 at the glorious St. Andrew Church on Tuesday, December 16. Then on Thursday, December 18, back on campus, grades 1-2 will perform followed by an Advent Tree lighting in the courtyard.

Without a doubt it is a busy time of year! Additional events include the Mothers of Alumni Mass on December 9 and the biggest Las Posadas ever on December 17 as third graders journey through the campus in costume as Mary and Joseph in search of shelter. Many blessings for the Advent season!
