The Student Athlete Lab to Hold its Inaugural Annual Scholar Athlete Award Reception

Kenyatta Smith

On August 10th 2014, the Student Athlete Lab is hosting its Inaugural Annual Scholar Athlete Award Reception. The reception will be held at Notte Luna located at 113 N. Maryland Ave., Glendale from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. and will be recognizing Harvard Student Athlete Kenyatta Smith.

The Student Athlete Lab is a basketball program that helps students hone their basketball skills while also preparing them scholastically through tutoring, SAT/ACT prep courses, life skills and interview skills so they have the tools they need to fulfill their dream of getting a college basketball scholarship.

Not all students can afford to participate in this program so the fundraiser was created so that the “Lab” can continue to provide opportunities to students, regardless of income. The Lab’s founder, Coach Craig Stover says, “I am so happy to be able to give deserving young athletes the opportunity to improve their athletic and academic growth through our scholarship program!”

Kenyatta Smith is a phenomenal basketball player that participated in The Student Athlete Lab and is beginning his senior year at Harvard this fall after leading the Crimson to the Ivy League championship and their first NCAA tournament victory in 2013. Before he joined Harvard, though, he attended Flintridge Preperatory School in La Canada Flintridge and lead the Flintridge Prep Rebels to their historic, first ever CIF Division V-AA Championship. Kenyatta was also one of seven players selected as a John R. Wooden High School Player of the Year. As coach Craig says, “Kenyatta exemplifies everything you can have in a student athlete–great player, great student, great person”.

Kenyatta will be the first recipient of the Scholar Athlete Award at the event. Coach Craig believes that “Creating an annual program that recognizes outstanding academic athletes is so important for the younger players to see”.

Hosted by national celebrity radio personality, Walt “Baby” Love, attendees of the event will have the pleasure of meeting and hearing from individuals that have contributed significantly to the community and to the development of student athletes.

Former NBA great and five-time all-star Marques Johnson will be recognized at the event. He is a local that honed his skills at Crenshaw High School before joining the NBA. Also being recognized is NFL great Nnamdi Asomugha who is not only a star athlete, but also the founder of the Asomugha College Tour for Scholars to help stellar students tour schools and gain exposure for their futures. Dr. Patrick Khaziran will be recognized for his contributions to the sports community and NBA players John Wall, Rashad McCants and Danny Granger.

There will also be a silent auction, food, beverages and live entertainment at the reception!
