California’s schools will not reopen before the end of this academic year due to the coronavirus crisis, Gov. Gavin Newsom announced on Wednesday.

The announcement came on the heels of a Tuesday statement by State Superintendent Tony Thurmond.

“Due to the current safety concerns and needs for ongoing social distancing, it currently appears that our students will not be able to return to school campuses before the end of the school year. This is in no way to suggest that school is over for the year, but rather we should put all efforts into strengthening our delivery of education through distance learning.”

As of Wednesday there were 37 cases of the Coronavirus. At least five people working for the school district have been tested. The results of those tests are not known.

Pasadena students are currently on spring break and will return on Monday.

According to board member Scott Phelps, the district already has a plan in place.

“Since we had done significant planning, we were able to launch immediately ahead of other districts. “The first phase was to use curriculum created by district central office staff through their huge efforts and a platform called Power School.” Students were accessing a curriculum that was appropriate for that grade level, but it wasn’t designed by their teachers. And then the next phase is teacher designed curriculum.”

The teacher designed plan will commence on Monday.

Virginia, Kansas and Arizona already closed schools for the rest of the year. California, the nation’s most populous state, has more than 6 million students across 10,000 schools.

Californians are under a statewide stay-at-home order that requires most people to stay inside except for essential activities such as grocery shopping or going for a walk.
