Pasadena city officials are urging residents to prepare — but not to “over prepare” — for The COVID-19 pandemic and in the process, change old shopping habits to new safer ones.

“When it comes to shopping for everyday needs during an emergency (public health, natural disaster or otherwise), it’s always a good idea to prep — but, be mindful that there’s a fine line between hoarding and prepping,” said Pasadena spokesperson Lisa Derderian.

Derderian said residents should start thinking about the community as a whole.

“The small choices we make could impact other people,” she said.

City officials urge residents to make sure they have enough supplies. A carefully planned suggestion list is on the city’s website here.

Meanwhile, health and emergency officials said residents should consider changing shopping habits to include avoiding currency in favor of point and pay, using mobile delivery services and social distancing in stores.

Businesses are responding by changing the way they are providing services and by instituting new stringent cleaning routines.

“Most, if not all, Pasadena businesses remain open!” Derderian said. “If you’re feeling a little uncertain about frequenting public places, show your local business community a little love by visiting them online or thru mobile delivery services.”

Vice Mayor Tyron Hampton, filling inf for Mayor Tornel while he is out the country, as all residentrs “to remember our local small businesses.”

“We begin what is likely to be at least 4-6 weeks of severe economic hardship for many of our local businesses and employees,” Hampton observed.

“If there are restaurants or businesses you like but don’t want to patronize at the moment, buy a gift certificate and you can use it later…the extra cash flow will help them now” Hampton suggested.

“This will be over soon, let’s make sure we pull through it with as little damage as possible to our local economy.”

“Let’s stick together Pasadena!” Hampton urged.
