City Considers Adding to Sidewalk Repairs Budget, Allocation Would Top $1.6 Million

Pasadena’s sidewalks need more patching.

Pasadena’s Department of Public Works is recommending an increase in the contract amount for FS Contractors Inc. which is doing repair and maintenance work on the City’s sidewalks and curbs.

An agenda report for Monday’s City Council meeting showed the recommended increase is by $230,000, for a total contract amount of $1.65 million from the original $1.419 million. The contract was awarded in October last year as part of the City’s Annual ADA Sidewalk Improvements Program for fiscal year 2020.

Increasing the contract amount requires an amendment to the operating budget of the Public Works Department for fiscal year 2020 by recognizing and appropriating $200,000 in private capital to fund the requested sidewalk repair work.

The agenda report showed that property owners pay the City for removal and replacement of damaged sidewalks at the time of building permit Issuance or property sales, in accordance with the Pasadena Municipal Code. Payments made from August 2019 through March 2020 under this arrangement will be recognized as well in the fiscal year 2020 budget, allowing an additional $150,000 to be included in the contract with FS Contractors.

In addition, Pasadena Water and Power will be installing new sidewalk and curb ramps along the Arroyo Blvd. frontage of Sheldon Reservoir using existing funding in the Reservoir Improvements project. As a result, Public Works said the contract will also be increased by $80,000 to complete the additional work of similar scope.

The number of working days stipulated in the contract will also be increased from 100 to 160 working days to complete the overall added work, the report showed.
