70,000 Watch As LAFC Edges Galaxy 2-1 in Rose Bowl Rivalry Match

LAFC defeated the LA Galaxy 2-1 in their “El Tráfico” rivalry match at the Rose Bowl on Thursday, drawing 70,076 fans. While short of last year’s MLS record 82,000 attendance, the game was the League’s second-best attended match so far in 2024.

Post-game fireworks illuminated the sky above nearby Brookside Golf Course as spectators exited the brightly lit stadium.

“I love fireworks, no matter where I see them,” said Elizabeth Montenegro, a Monrovia resident.

Pasadena Public Information Officer Lisa Derderian said fans arrived early to enjoy the pre-activities, which helped manage traffic flow.

“Patrons were excited to be there and celebrate the 4th watching a great match-up with family and friends,” Derderian said.

City officials had been concerned about the possible effects of high heat on fans.

Pasadena Fire Department personnel treated 34 patients for a range of medical aid needs and transported 10 to a local hospital.

“Our on-site physician team was a huge success,” Derderian said. “They evaluated nine patients and were able to provide treatment on-site [which prevented] five ambulance transports.”

No report on arrests during the game could be provided by Pasadena police as of this writing.

The Independence Day showdown, the 23rd edition of the cross-town rivalry, saw both teams enter the contest tied atop the Western Conference with 40 points each.

LAFC struck first, taking the lead in the opening half, though details of the scoring remained unclear.

The match, which kicked off at 7:30 p.m., was preceded by a festive SoccerFest outside Gate A, featuring live music, DJ performances, and family-friendly activities. Adding to the patriotic atmosphere, the Condor Squadron performed a flyover in restored World War II-era aircraft, while U.S. Air Force Senior Airman Alycia Cancel sang the national anthem.

Grammy Award-winning producer AFROJACK provided pre-game and halftime entertainment, keeping the energy high throughout the evening.

Following the match, spectators were treated to the LA Galaxy’s traditional Fourth of July fireworks show, launched from the north end of the stadium and visible to departing fans.
