With temperatures over the weekend expected to hover about 90 degrees on both Saturday and Sunday under clear skies and a blazing sun, and the City of Pasadena is reminding residents to limit their time outdoors and be mindful of their health.
“Please stay hydrated and limit time spent outdoors. Know the warning signs & what to do if you or a loved one begins showing signs of heat illness,” a post on the City’s Twitter account said early Friday.
City spokesperson Lisa Derderian said excessive heat could lead to serious heat-related issues, so it would be a good idea to wear loose, lightweight, light-colored clothing; use your oven less to help reduce the temperature in your home; drink plenty of fluids to stay hydrated; and find shade when going outside.
Avoiding high-energy activities or work outdoors during midday heat would also help prevent heat-related illness, as would using a chilled cloth on the back of your neck to cool off.
Heat illnesses, such as heat exhaustion and heat stroke, could be identified using three S’s, Derderian added: speech slurs, sweat excessively, and stroke-like symptoms. When having these symptoms, or any indication that you’re suffering from the heat, you can always call 911 as a precaution.
Throughout Pasadena and Los Angeles, building high pressure aloft will keep clear skies across the area with a warming trend through Sunday, the NWS forecast said. Above-normal temperatures are forecast for the valleys, mountains, and the interior by Friday and into the weekend.
The NWS also warned the heat could harm especially vulnerable populations: young children and infants, older adults, people with chronic medical conditions, and pregnant women.
