The Pasadena Public Library is giving away free commemorative mugs to celebrate its 140th anniversary, offering patrons a tangible piece of local history starting this week.
Library visitors can pick up the limited-edition 140th Anniversary mugs at any branch library while supplies last.
The giveaway adds a souvenir to the library system’s lineup of commemorations about the milestone for the institution, which has served Pasadena since 1884.
“Since first opening our doors in 1884, we have served our community with free and open places to commune, connect, learn, read and belong,” the library said in a statement on its website.
The celebration comes as the library system faces challenges. In May 2021, the Central Library closed temporarily following a structural assessment that uncovered its susceptibility to seismic activity due to unreinforced masonry.
Despite the closure, the library system continues to operate through its nine branch libraries in addition to the Central Library. The Central Library has long served as the cornerstone of the Pasadena Public Library, providing crucial support to its branches.
As part of the anniversary, the library is showcasing stories from staff, supporters, and patrons. These narratives underscore the community’s central role in the institution’s longevity.
The library’s website https://bit.ly/45y39h0 provides more information about the 140th Anniversary Celebration and the future of the Central Library. Plans include necessary earthquake retrofitting to ensure the building’s safety and its significant contributions in the 21st century.
Throughout its history, the Pasadena Public Library has aimed to shape the past, sculpt the present, and build toward a brighter future for the community it serves.
