A hearing scheduled Wednesday will determine the next steps in the prosecution of Juan Pablo Flores, accused of a violent assault that left a woman critically injured at a Pasadena Metro station.

Flores, 33, faces attempted murder and mayhem charges for an attack on Aug. 7, 2024 at the Allen Metro station.

Prosecutors allege he brutally assaulted a woman, throwing her onto train tracks and then into the carpool lane of the 210 Freeway.

According to Los Angeles County District Attorney George Gascón, Flores is charged with one count of attempted murder and one count of mayhem.

Bail was set at $2 million, with a potential maximum sentence of life in prison if convicted.

Court documents reveal the attack occurred around 5:30 a.m. when Flores allegedly punched the victim multiple times in an unprovoked assault.

He was arrested 15 minutes later by Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Transit Services Bureau personnel at the intersection of Allen Avenue and Villa Street.

The victim suffered severe injuries, including a broken nose, multiple cuts requiring staples, broken bones, and potential long-term disfigurement.

She has required ongoing medical treatment and family assistance while recovering.

The case comes amid growing concerns about safety on the Los Angeles Metro system.

Violent crime on LA Metro increased 33% in the previous year, prompting calls for enhanced security measures from County Supervisors Janice Hahn and Kathryn Barger.

The preliminary hearing, set for 8:30 a.m. in Department H of the Pasadena Courthouse, will determine whether sufficient evidence exists to proceed to trial.

Flores previously pleaded not guilty to the charges during an Aug. 27 arraignment.

The Metro Board has since declared a public safety emergency, implementing additional security initiatives including enhanced driver barriers, increased security teams, and pilot programs for weapons detection.
