The United States Postal Service announced it is fully prepared for this year’s holiday season following a multiyear modernization effort that expanded processing capacity, workforce stability and delivery efficiency. Over the past four years, USPS has invested nearly $20 billion in new technology, equipment and facilities to strengthen its nationwide service network.
“The Postal Service plans throughout the year to deliver the nation’s mail and packages during the high-volume holiday season and we are well prepared and ready to deliver for the American public,” said Postmaster General and CEO David Steiner. He noted that USPS continues to gain market share in package delivery, reflecting “the strong value and excellent portfolio of shipping options we provide.”
USPS has increased its daily processing capacity from 60 million to 88 million pieces, adding 614 automated sorting machines since 2020, including 94 this year. The upgrades allow handling larger volumes with faster tracking visibility. In December, USPS delivered 45 percent more packages per operating day than competitors, averaging more than 350 million mail pieces daily.
Since 2020, the organization has converted 232,000 precareer employees to full-time positions and will hire 14,000 temporary workers this season—a sharp decrease from 40,000 in previous years. Updated service standards now ensure two- and three-day regional turnaround for mail and packages.
New facilities opened in Dallas, Phoenix and Johnson City, Tennessee this year, with additional centers slated for Memphis, Birmingham, Tampa and San Antonio. These facilities join nine regional processing and distribution centers, 19 transfer hubs, 17 local processing centers and 133 sorting centers opened in the past four years.
The agency’s modernization includes deploying nearly 29,000 new delivery vehicles, over 24,000 now in use, as part of a 106,480-vehicle fleet transition—66,000 of them zero-emission electric models. USPS plans to sustain affordable shipping with multiple service options such as USPS Ground Advantage, Priority Mail and Priority Mail Express, all including tracking and insurance.
