Two months after the last choice for the job decided not to accept the position, a city official told Pasadena Now on there is no update on the search for a permanent city manager.
“No updates to report at this time,” said Public Information Officer Lisa Derderian.
On April 25, Pasadena Now reported that Mike Futrell, who had been picked by the City Council in April to succeed former City Manager Miguel Márquez, announced he would stay in his current position as Riverside’s city manager instead of accepting Pasadena’s offer. Futrell had been scheduled to begin work in Pasadena on May 13.
That choice was fraught with controversy over alleged actions by Futrell’s wife while he was serving in Riverside.
Futrell resigned from that position. His wife won a settlement over allegations made against her by Riverside city leaders, which she allegedly claimed were passed on to Pasadena city leaders.
The City Council has been searching for a permanent city manager since Márquez announced last year that he would retire.
City officials have not indicated whether the council intends to reopen the recruitment process, revisit previous candidates or pursue another course of action.
Matthew Hawkesworth has served as Acting City Manager while the council conducts its search for a permanent replacement.
