Students’ Concept Cars Head to Monterey Car Week

Two concept cars that were created during internships by a pair of Pasadena design students will go on display this week at one of Monterey Car Week’s most exclusive events.

ArtCenter College of Design, the Pasadena school with long ties to the auto industry, said the quarter-scale models — built by Transportation Design students Travis Yang and Alexander Wang during internships at Honda — will be showcased Friday at The Quail by The Peninsula, A Motorsports Gathering in Carmel-by-the-Sea. In an announcement, the college said the appearance marks its 24th consecutive year at Monterey Car Week.

The two projects, which ArtCenter identified as “Dimension Zero” by Yang and “F-Zero” by Wang, are examples of the concept work produced in the college’s Transportation Design program.

ArtCenter’s presence at the week’s events extends to its graduates. The college said Delaney Barr, who earned a bachelor’s degree in Transportation Design in 2025, was chosen to create the official 2026 poster for The Quail. According to ArtCenter, the artwork will be unveiled at the event and displayed in the college’s exhibition.

The school will also present its annual ArtCenter Design Excellence Awards at two of the week’s events. At The Quail, the college said, Transportation Design students will judge the award themselves, selecting the vehicle they consider the strongest example of automotive design. At the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance two days later, ArtCenter said the judges will be college President Karen Hofmann, Transportation Design Chair Marek Djordjevic and Robert Cameron, whom the college identified as the son of the late British car designer Ian Cameron. Ian Cameron, who led Rolls-Royce’s design team, was killed in 2024.

The Quail runs Friday, Aug. 14, at Quail Lodge & Golf Club, 8205 Valley Greens Drive in Carmel-by-the-Sea. ArtCenter said it will also exhibit Saturday, Aug. 15, at Exotics on Broadway, and take part in the Pebble Beach Concours on Aug. 16.

Founded in Pasadena in 1930, ArtCenter has grown into a pipeline to the auto industry from its campus on Lida Street, and its alumni and faculty have shaped many of today’s production vehicles, concept cars and collector automobiles.

The Quail by The Peninsula, A Motorsports Gathering takes place Friday, Aug. 14 from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., according to ticket guides, at Quail Lodge & Golf Club, 8205 Valley Greens Drive, Carmel-by-the-Sea. The Quail is a capped, premium event sold through Peninsula Hotels; ticket prices run into the thousands of dollars and the gathering is typically sold out well before its date, with only resale listings available close to the event. On-site parking at the lodge is limited, and Car Week guides advise arranging a shuttle or car service rather than driving in; no public parking fee or lot has been announced. Throughout the week, the college said, its Transportation Design and Photography students will move among the cars, sketching and photographing them and meeting industry leaders — a working preview of the profession many of them are aiming for.
