A Lander Bound for the Moon Gets Shaken, Blasted, and Frozen at JPL

Astrobotic's Griffin-1, designated NASA Moon Base II, undergoes environmental testing near Pasadena ahead of a late-2026 launch to the lunar south pole

A spacecraft headed for the Moon is spending the summer in the foothills above Pasadena, getting rattled, blasted with sound, and baked in simulated space — all before it ever leaves the ground.

Astrobotic’s Griffin-1 lunar lander, which NASA has designated Moon Base II, arrived at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory this month for environmental testing ahead of a planned launch no earlier than November. The lander, with a payload capacity of 625 kilograms to the lunar surface, will carry 10 payloads from six nations to Nobile Crater near the Moon’s south pole — including what Astrobotic says will be the largest commercial payload ever delivered to the lunar surface. It is among the first missions in NASA’s Moon Base program, the agency’s plan to establish a permanent human presence on the Moon through dozens of robotic deliveries beginning next year.

At JPL’s Environmental Test Laboratory, built in the 1960s and modernized over the decades, engineers will subject the integrated spacecraft to vibration testing that simulates the violence of launch, acoustic testing that replicates the 150-plus-decibel roar of rocket engines, and thermal vacuum testing that mimics the extreme temperatures of space and the lunar surface. The same facilities prepared NASA’s Voyager probes, the Perseverance Mars rover, and the Europa Clipper spacecraft for their missions.

“There’s a lot of knowledge gained over the years, passed from one generation of JPL engineers to another, that we bring to bear to support our own missions as well as commercial efforts,” Michel William, a JPL engineer in the Environmental Test Laboratory, said in a December 2025 article from JPL about the lab’s expanding role in testing commercial lunar landers. “The little details that go into getting these tests right — nobody teaches you that in school.”

Griffin-1 is being developed under NASA’s Commercial Lunar Payload Services initiative, the program through which the agency contracts with private companies to deliver science instruments and technology demonstrations to the Moon. Astrobotic, a Pittsburgh-based company now operating as Voyager Lunar Systems after its acquisition by Voyager Technologies in July, built the lander at its headquarters and shipped it to California this month, according to a Voyager Technologies press release.

The mission carries heightened stakes. Astrobotic’s first lander, Peregrine, launched on January 8, 2024, but a faulty helium pressure control valve caused a propellant leak that made a Moon landing impossible. The spacecraft burned up in Earth’s atmosphere 10 days later. An August 2024 review found the single valve failure responsible for the mission’s loss. Engineers redesigned the propulsion system with dual-redundant valves — two independent components of different types — so a single failure point could not doom the mission again, according to published reports.

“Today, Griffin stands behind us as proof of what is possible when talented people spend years solving hard problems together,” John Thornton, CEO of Astrobotic, said at the lander’s unveiling in Pittsburgh on June 15, according to a company press release. “This spacecraft represents the transportation and logistics systems that will enable humanity’s long-term future beyond Earth.”

The mission’s primary payload is Astrolab’s FLIP rover, a 500-kilogram vehicle that will demonstrate mobility and autonomous surface operations at the lunar south pole. At that weight, FLIP will be the heaviest commercial payload ever landed on the Moon, according to SpaceNews. The rover will be integrated onto the lander at Cape Canaveral, Florida, after the JPL testing campaign is complete and Griffin-1 returns briefly to Pittsburgh for additional work.

NASA announced its Moon Base program on March 24, 2026, during an event called “Ignition” at the agency’s Washington headquarters. The plan calls for approximately $20 billion over seven years to build surface infrastructure at the lunar south pole, with an accelerated cadence of commercial lander deliveries, according to NASA documents. On May 26, NASA designated the first three missions as Moon Base I, II, and III. Griffin-1 received the Moon Base II designation.

Voyager Technologies completed its acquisition of Astrobotic on July 13 for $162 million in cash and stock, plus the assumption of $9 million in debt and up to $129 million in additional earnout payments tied to mission milestones, according to SpaceNews. NASA also recently awarded approximately $298 million in new contracts to the company for two additional lunar lander missions, according to a Voyager press release.

After testing at JPL, Griffin-1 will return to Pittsburgh for final integration before shipping to Kennedy Space Center in Florida. The lander is scheduled to launch on a SpaceX Falcon Heavy rocket no earlier than November, according to Voyager Technologies. It will take several days to reach the Moon before descending autonomously to Nobile Crater at the south pole.

The tests now under way at JPL will determine whether the spacecraft can withstand the journey. The facilities that once prepared probes for the outer solar system are now helping to ready the vehicles that may build the first permanent outpost on another world.
