All Saints Church, Pasadena to Screen HBO Documentary on Jeremy Lin’s Historic NBA Moment

A HBO documentary chronicling Jeremy Lin’s remarkable 2012 performance against the Los Angeles Lakers will be screened at All Saints Church Pasadena on Saturday, Nov. 2.

The film, “38 At The Garden,” documents how Lin, an undrafted Harvard graduate, shocked fans, stunned teammates and galvanized the Asian American community when he scored 38 points against Lakers star Kobe Bryant at Madison Square Garden.

The Mr. Fahrenheit and GTG Entertainment production, directed by Frank Chi and produced by Travon Free and Samir Hernandez, examines Lin’s rise to prominence and its broader significance.

“The first time I watched (it), it was the first screening at (the) Tribeca Film Festival. And I was blown away,” Lin told the Los Angeles Times in February 2023^[a].

“I went through Linsanity from my perspective. I was not reading everything that was being said out there,” Lin continued in the LA Times interview. “To see it from everyone else’s lens was really impactful.”

The documentary takes on additional resonance against the backdrop of recent hate crimes targeting the Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders community, according to HBO.

Executive producers include prominent media figure Lisa Ling, alongside Patricia Sun, Brandon Chu, Kai Huang, Mike Lee, Dave Lu, and Paul Sri, with Bentley Weiner producing for HBO.

The screening, jointly presented by All Saints Church’s Racial Justice Ministry and Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders Ministry, will include a potluck gathering from 3 to 6 p.m. in the Learning Center, with everyone welcome to attend.
