The Altadena Chamber of Commerce’s prestigious Speaker Series continues to attract federal and state politicians, next month featuring California State Treasurer Fiona Ma and U.S. Representative Judy Chu as speakers.
On August 9, from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m., Ma will deliver a virtual presentation that will include a discussion on resources available at the Treasurer’s Office for small businesses, and financial wellness.
Continuing the series, Congresswoman Judy Chu, who represents California’s 27th district which includes Altadena and Pasadena, will address the community on August 30, from 4 to 5 p.m.
The series is held regularly at the Altadena Country Club, located at 2290 Country Club Drive.
As a Certified Public Accountant, Ma has had a successful career in accounting and finance before entering politics. Her political career began in 2006 when she was elected to the California State Assembly, representing the 12th District. She later served as the Chair of the California State Board of Equalization, overseeing tax administration and compliance in the state.
In 2018, Ma was elected as State Treasurer, responsible for managing California’s finances and overseeing various financial programs and investments.
Congresswoman Judy Chu holds a Bachelor’s degree in Mathematics from UCLA, a Master’s degree in Public Health from the UC Berkeley, and a Doctorate in Psychology from the California School of Professional Psychology.
Her political career began in 1985 when she was elected to the Garvey School District Board of Education where she served as a board member for five years. In 1988, she was elected to the Monterey Park City Council, and went on to serve as Mayor of Monterey Park for three terms. In 2001, Chu was elected to the California State Assembly, where she served until 2006.
In 2009, she won a special election for the U.S. House of Representatives to fill the seat vacated by Hilda Solis when she became U.S. Secretary of Labor. Since then, Chu has been re-elected to Congress multiple times.
As a prominent figure in Congress, Judy Chu is known for her strong advocacy on several key policy issues including healthcare, education, immigration, civil rights, and environmental protection.
Presented by the Altadena’s Chamber’s Legislative and Government Affairs Committee, the 2023 Speaker Series promises valuable insights. Chamber members can attend for free, while non-members can secure their spot for a nominal fee of $20.
