Altadena residents will head to the polls on November 5 noon to 6 p.m. and November 9 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. to elect new representatives for the Altadena Town Council.

“The Altadena Town Council provides two days of voting to allow for all those wishing to vote to have ample opportunity,” explained Executive Committee Chair Victoria Knapp.

The election aims to fill positions across Altadena’s eight census tracts, ensuring community representation on the volunteer council that addresses local issues and represents residents’ interests.

“I move to approve the slate of candidates as presented here,” said Pat Sutherlen, recording secretary, at the October 15th Town Council meeting where candidates introduced themselves.

The motion passed unanimously, setting the stage for the upcoming election.

Voting will take place on Tuesday, November 5th from noon to 6 p.m. at the main Altadena Library on Mariposa Street.

Several incumbents are running unopposed, including Connor Cipolla in Census Tract 4601, Nic Arnzen in 4602, Isis Moulden in 4610, and ViEyvette Stewart-Gordon in Census Tract 4611.

Candidates running unopposed only need 10 votes to be elected, highlighting the importance of community participation in local governance.

New candidates include Darlene J. Greene in 4603.02, replacing retiring member Chris O’Malley, and Adam Vourvoulis in CT4612, taking over for Doug Colliflower who chose not to run again.

Contested races are taking place in several tracts. In Census Tract 4613, incumbent Diane Marcussen faces a challenge from newcomer Evan Lavoie. Both candidates emphasized their professional backgrounds and commitment to the community during their introductions. In Census Tract 4603.01, incumbent Milissa Marona is running against newcomer Arman Dashyan.

Candidates shared their qualifications and visions for Altadena during the meeting. Their full qualification statements will be available on the Town Council website for voters seeking more information.

The Town Council reminded current members to collect any Now Seeking Applications signs they had placed around the community to prepare for the upcoming election.

The Altadena Town Council election is non-partisan, with candidates prohibited from using political party endorsements in their campaigns. Candidates can submit statements or flyers for public viewing at polling places. Campaign activities must adhere to specific rules, including restrictions on campaign signs and a ban on negative campaigning.

Voting is open to Altadena residents aged 18 and over, who must provide proof of residency. No absentee or write-in ballots are allowed. Polling staff must be Altadena residents, and candidates or their relatives cannot work at polling places.

Vote counting is conducted by the Election Committee, with results announced promptly. Candidates can request to be observers but cannot participate in the count. Ballots are kept until the election is certified.

Challenges to the election process must be submitted in writing before the Executive Committee meeting on November 12, 2024. The Town Council will certify the election results at its November 19, 2024 meeting, resolving any challenges or disqualification recommendations.
