[Updated]  The Angeles National Forest, encompassing the San Gabriel Mountains National Monument, has been temporarily closed to the public due to critical fire danger through Sunday,  January 19angeles forest wesite

at 12:00 midnight.

During this period, the following activities are prohibited within the forest boundaries:

  • Entering or being upon the Angeles National Forest.
  • Traveling on any National Forest System road within the Angeles National Forest.
  • Using any National Forest System trail within the Angeles National Forest.

These restrictions apply to all individuals, including those with valid California Campfire Permits. Exemptions are granted only to federal, state, or local officers, or members of organized rescue or firefighting forces performing official duties, and persons with a specific Forest Service permit exempting them from this order.

Violations of these prohibitions can result in fines up to $5,000 for individuals or $10,000 for organizations, and/or imprisonment for up to six months. Additionally, individuals causing a wildfire may be held liable for all suppression costs.

The decision to close the forest follows an increase in the fire danger level to ‘critical,’ the highest level, as of January 9, 2025. This escalation is attributed to ongoing wildfires in the region, including the Eaton Fire, which has burned over 13,690 acres in the canyons above Altadena and Pasadena, approaching Mount Wilson.

The Angeles National Forest spans approximately 700,000 acres and is a popular destination for outdoor recreation. The current closure aims to protect public safety and preserve natural resources during this period of heightened fire risk.

For more information and updates, individuals are advised to visit the official Angeles National Forest website or contact the forest’s information line.
