The Pasadena Human Relations Commission will help launch United Against Hate Week on Sunday, Oct. 18, with a free community gathering at the Western Justice Center featuring speakers, music, family activities and voter registration.

The event, called DENA Neighbors United Against Hate and Neighborfest, is scheduled for 1:30 to 4:30 p.m. at 55 S. Grand Ave. Organizers are inviting residents of Pasadena, Altadena and South Pasadena.

According to the Western Justice Center’s event announcement, Rep. Judy Chu, Los Angeles County Human Relations Commission Executive Director Robin Toma and Madison are listed as featured speakers. The gathering is billed as an indoor, all-ages event with food, live music, family-friendly activities and information about local resources.

The event is scheduled for the opening day of United Against Hate Week, which runs Oct. 18–24. The initiative encourages local communities to organize activities addressing hate and bias.

Pasadena’s observance is organized through a coalition of government and community organizations. Collaborate PASadena identifies the Human Relations Commission, Western Justice Center, Center for Restorative Justice, Muslim Public Affairs Council and Collaborate PASadena among the local organizing partners.

The Western Justice Center says this year’s gathering also includes resources for people who want to organize neighborhood activities. Its digital Neighborfest toolkit suggests backyard gatherings, block parties and activities hosted by schools, religious congregations and community groups. The center says displaced residents can participate remotely in neighborhood gatherings.

Organizers describe getting to know neighbors as central to the event’s purpose. The gathering is intended to give residents an opportunity to meet people from their communities, share experiences and learn about organizations working on inclusion and discrimination-related issues.

The event also includes voter registration, according to Councilmember Steve Madison’s newsletter.
