In a pair of heartwarming community service events, Pasadena police spread Thanksgiving happiness — and delicious holiday turkeys and meals — to those in need across the city this week.
On Thanksgiving Day, police command staff, detectives, air operations crews, officers, civilian employees and family members completed dozens of deliveries to shut-ins and the elderly in what has become a holiday tradition.
Just the day before, police joined with local community organizations to provide Thanksgiving turkeys to more than 130 families and holiday gift cards to 40 elderly residents.
The Wednesday initiative brought together several local organizations including Miracle on 1st Street, Neighbors Acting Together Helping All (NATHA), Flintridge Center and the Jackie Robinson Community Center.
“Watching our community come together to support one another was truly heartwarming,” police officials said in a statement.
During Thanksgiving Salvation Army festivities, dozens of the Police Department members many with their family members, fanned out from the Salvation Army complex on Walnut Street near Lake Avenue, where volunteers had prepared meals for hundreds of residents.
Later in the day, hundreds of community members and a number of homeless people were expected at the Salvation Army Tabernacle Corps building for Thanksgiving dinners and fellowship.
Police traditionally deliver the cooked meals to as many as 600 seniors across the city.
Police Chief Gene Harris attended both events.
Earlier he told his officers and unsworn Department employees the events were an opportunity “for us to get out here and really demonstrate to the community what it is we’re about.”
