Senator Anthony J. Portantino, who represents Pasadena, introduced a Senate Bill Monday aimed at promoting equal access to higher education for all Californians, including undocumented students. Senate Bill 467 bill seeks to break down barriers that prevent undocumented students from accessing higher education opportunities and secure jobs.
Senator Portantino stated that undocumented students are a crucial part of California’s workforce, but often face challenges in accessing higher education and securing employment.
“SB 467 helps address one of these challenges and ensures immigration status is no longer a legal barrier to achieving educational goals,” he said.
Previously, the legislature approved a number of measures aimed at removing enrollment barriers, increasing financial aid, and changing the funding formula to incentivize completion and promote job placement for certificate programs.
SB 467 would prohibit community colleges from denying students access to career technical education programs based on the use of an individual tax identification number in the background check for internships or apprenticeships.
Wendy Brill-Wynkoop, President of the Faculty Association of California Community Colleges, said that community colleges are a beacon for all Californians who wish to pursue higher education and career advancement goals. She applauded Senator Portantino’s continued efforts in supporting undocumented students within the state’s community college system.
Senator Portantino has a long history of supporting undocumented students and was recently honored with a Higher Education Legacy distinction by the Campaign for College Opportunity. The proposed bill is expected to bring significant positive changes to the education system in California and provide equal opportunities to all.
