The Pasadena Recreation and Parks Commission will consider supporting a concept design for modernizing the Brenner Park playground during their regular meeting on Tuesday, February 4, 2025, at 6:00 p.m. on the Second Floor of the City Yards Public Works Building at 233 West Mountain Street.

The proposed $1,057,026 project would relocate and upgrade the existing playground at the 2-acre park located at 235 Barthe Drive. The facility currently serves as a beloved community hub, featuring a baseball field, tennis court, basketball court, and a playground. The existing climbing-themed equipment, installed in 2009 in the park’s lower northern section, has become outdated and sees limited community use, according to a Department of Public Works memorandum from Director Greg de Vinck.

“The community expressed overwhelming support for relocating the new playground to the upper section of Brenner Park and had no objection to the presented concept design,” the report states. The plan includes new play equipment, a shade structure, and a rubberized play surface “ensuring a safer and more modern play experience for park visitors.”

Parks, Recreation & Community Services staff, in collaboration with the Department of Public Works, developed the concept through extensive community engagement, including two public meetings held on March 3 and August 26, 2023, and an online survey to gather feedback on equipment preferences and potential replacement options. Senior Project Manager Tiffiny Chen will present the proposal.

If the Commission endorses the design as an action item, staff will proceed with finalizing construction documents and advertising for bids in Spring 2025. Construction is tentatively scheduled to begin in Fall 2025, with funding available through the Brenner Park Playground Improvement (78200) Capital Improvement Program project.

The public can comment on the proposal in person by submitting a speaker card before public comment begins, or by emailing written correspondence of any length to: shouser@cityofpasadena.net

at least 30 minutes before the meeting starts. Later submissions will be forwarded to the Commission the next business day.
