California First Partner Jennifer Siebel Newsom is scheduled to join hundreds of students in Pasadena today for “Move Your Body, Calm Your Mind Day,” a statewide initiative promoting physical activity and mental wellness.

More than 600 students from two Pasadena Unified School District schools are to participate in dancing, yoga, meditation and drumboxing activities alongside Siebel Newsom, mental health professionals and athletes.

“Our physical and mental health are inextricably linked,” Siebel Newsom said in a statement for the 2024 Move Your Body, Calm Your Mind event.

The Pasadena marks the third annual observance of the day focused on movement, mindfulness and play.

Following the morning event, Siebel Newsom will travel to San Mateo County for a second celebration at 3:50 p.m. with Olympic and World Cup Champion Brandi Chastain and nearly 250 children at a local Boys & Girls Club. Activities will include pickleball, soccer, Zumba, mindfulness crafts and yoga.

“We know that in this fast-paced society with technology kind of consuming our lives, we’re all in overdrive — kind of in flight or fight — and [we need] more time to slow down, more time in nature, and in community,” Siebel Newsom said during last year’s celebration.

Siebel Newsom, who co-chairs the Governor’s Advisory Council on Physical Fitness and Mental Well-Being, has shared her personal wellness practices including nature walks, meditation, pilates and yoga.

“One of the things that I do to take care of myself is go for walks in nature with my dogs. I also play sports with my children and I try to do Pilates or yoga a few times a week just on my own,” she said in a promotional video.

The “Move Your Body, Calm Your Mind” campaign was launched in 2023 by the Governor’s Advisory Council on Physical Fitness and Mental Well-Being, the California Department of Health Care Services and the California Department of Public Health.
