Caltech Men’s Tennis kicked off the week with a convincing victory over Wabash College, taking the doubles point and quickly picking up singles points to seal the third win of the season.

The Beavers struck first in third doubles as sophomore Marco Yang (Fremont, Calif. / Mission San Jose) and senior Bharathan Sundar (Southborough, Mass. / Algonquin Regional) rolled past their opponents with a 6-3 set score, and the sophomore duo of Tejas Ram (Allen, Texas / Allen) and Constantin Cedillo-Vayson de Pradenne (Paris / Lycée Jean de La Fontaine) held on for a 7-5 set win to clinch the doubles point for Caltech.

Cedillo-Vayson de Pradenne kept the momentup up in first singles witih a 6-2, 6-3 win, followed moments later by Sophomore Eric He (Martinsville, N.J. / Bridgewater Raritan) claiming a 6-4, 6-0 triumph in fifth singles.

The clincher came on Court 6 as Yang caught fire after a 7-5 first set with an unblemished 6-0 second set, giving the Beavers their decisive fourth match point.

First-year Kenneth Chan (Hinsdale, Ill. / Pine Crest) picked up his second collegiate singles victory 6-4, 2-6, 1-0 [6], coming all the way back from a second-set loss and a 6-3 deficit in the 10-point super tiebreak.

The Beavers’ final match point came from #2 Singles, as junior Andrew Zabelo (Florham Park, N.J. / Newark Academy) and his opponent were locked in a tight battle, with Zabelo taking the first set 7-5 and his opponent rallying to tie the second set 6-6 and then win it with a 7-3 tiebreak score. Zabelo regained control in the super tiebreaker and closed the door with a 10-5 score.

“I’m happy we could finally win the doubles point to get us started on the right foot, and backed that up by keeping our foot on the gas in singles,” Head Coach Adam Clark said. “In the end, everyone contributed to a win on the scoreboard today, and I hope this confidence fuels us for a few tough matches that are ahead.”

Clark and the Beavers’ next scheduled match is set for Thursday at 2 p.m. against Haverford College on the Caltech Tennis Courts.
