Caltech Track & Field broke three school records and achieved an 80% personal record rate at the Moorpark Invitational Friday. The Beavers set the new high marks for Caltech in the women’s 4x100m relay, the women’s 100m, and the men’s hammer throw.
Senior Lily Randall (Astoria, Ore. / Astoria) took off from the starting block, followed by sophomores Ivy Brainard (Charlotte, N.C. / Providence Day) and Isha Goswami (Saratoga, Calif. / Saratoga) and senior anchor Isabela Ciniceros (Mukilteo, Wash. / Kamiak) combined to break the Caltech program record in the 4x100m. They shattered the previous Caltech record of 51.62 by over a second. Brainard, Ciniceros, and Goswami were also involved in setting Caltech’s previous historical benchmark at the SCIAC Quad Cup just six days earlier.
Brainard was not done making history, as she also set the fastest women’s 100m dash time ever achieved by a Caltech athlete, crossing the finish line after 12.81 seconds.
On the men’s side, Daniel Amelinez-Robles (Madison, Wis. / James Madison Memorial) threw the hammer farther than any Beaver had before (53.27) en route to winning the event, breaking his own record in the process. He continued his domination at Moorpark by winning the discus event with a season-best of 41.66m. First-year teammate Maxwell Braithwaite (Webster, N.Y. / Webster Thomas) finished second in the hammer throw (43.97m) and Luke Lamitina (Pittsburgh, Penn. / Winchester Thurston) (41.79m) finished fifth, both setting personal records in the process.
First-year Katelyn Sadorf (Boca Raton, Fla. / Spanish River) set a new personal best of 2:21.40 in the 800m, finishing third overall. The performance crushed her previous best by over 4.5 seconds. Her performance entered her name into the top-10 list of best women’s 800m times in Beaver history. First-year Lucas Smith (Hailey, Idaho / Wood River) also achieved that feat in his event, finishing second at Moorpark in the pole vault with a personal best of 4.27m.
Lamitina also finished second overall in the Javelin (45.29m) and his Senior teammate Ezra Johnson (Columbus, Ohio / Columbus Academy) hurled the shot 12.95m and himself to a second place finish in the shot put.
On the track, Lamitina edged out a personal best of 11.85 in the 100 meters, finishing third in his heat. His senior teammate Antonio Machado de Olivera (Vitoria, Brazil / Instituto Federal do Espirito Santo) showed out in the 200 meters, with a new personal record of 24.56.
Up next for Head Coach Kelli Blake and the Beavers is the Pomona-Pitzer Invite on Saturday, April 12 at 9:15am.
