Following their victory against the University of Mary Washington this Tuesday, the first mid-season rankings poll from the International Tennis Association placed the Caltech women’s tennis team at No. 29 in the nation among Division III schools.

Previously in the February 12 preseason ITA rankings, the Beavers were ranked #32 nationally, moving up three placements after a strong start to their season.

“It is nice to get some recognition for our strong start, and I’m very proud of the way our team has responded after a challenging preseason,” noted Head Coach Nyssa Peele celebrating the achievement. “But it’s important that we keep building on it, keep working hard and getting better every day, so we’re ready to compete when the SCIAC schedule comes.”

And a tough SCIAC schedule that will be. The Caltech women’s tennis team is set to face a gauntlet consisting of four other nationally ranked SCIAC rivals. Caltech begins SCIAC competition on March 29, taking on the No. 2 nationally ranked Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Athenas. The following week will see play host to the currently #4 ranked Pomona-Pitzer Sagehens on April 5. Then, they march onward to Orange, CA to challenge the newly ranked #39 Chapman University Panthers on April 11, and after a short four day turnaround, return to home to Pasadena to host the #22 University of Redlands Bulldogs on April 15.

The team will have three weeks to prepare for SCIAC competition. Coach Peele and the Beavers remain in Pasadena to host Vassar College on their home courts next Wednesday, March 12.
