Caltrans has announced various closures on the I-210 freeway through Friday, July 28, as part of the I-210 Pavement Project.
The closures will occur daily from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. and will affect various on- and off-ramps, ramp lanes, and adjacent street lanes at Allen Ave., Altadena Dr., and Sierra Madre Blvd.
The project aims to improve the freeway’s infrastructure and extend its service life.
The I-210 Pavement Project has a total length of 9.7 miles and aims to replace pavement on 52 lane miles of the freeway from State Route Wheatland Ave. to Interstate 5. The project also includes rehabilitation of on and off-ramps, connectors, adjacent shoulders, overhead sign structures, traffic loop detectors, center median barrier, and guardrail system.
Upgrades to the freeway lighting system, traffic signals at on- and off-ramps, and existing curb ramps to comply with the Americans with Disabilities Act are also part of the project. Stormwater treatment devices will be added to prevent trash from contaminating stormwater drain systems.
Caltrans will issue a 30-day notice on social media platforms for any long-term closure of on/off-ramps. Extended weekend closures will occur, including full closures of the I-210 freeway on Friday and Sunday evenings in only one direction. Detour routes will be posted for motorists to continue their commutes, and traffic fines will be doubled in construction zones.
The I-210 Pavement Project is funded by SB 1 (Road Repair and Accountability Act of 2017) with a total cost of $135.5 million. The rehabilitation is expected to provide a smoother ride for motorists and extend the freeway’s service life.
Construction work began in summer 2020 and is projected to be completed by spring 2024.
