Alleged Carjacking Suspect Shot Dead By Pasadena Police Identified As Former Resident

An armed alleged carjacking suspect shot to death by Pasadena police Saturday at the end of a vehicle pursuit was a Montebello resident but originally from Pasadena, coroner and police officials said.

Adam Mostafa Youines was 35 years old, officials reported late Saturday

Youines was shot and killed by Pasadena police about 2:25 a.m. after he drove at them in an allegedly stolen vehicle in the parking lot of a strip mall in the 600 block of North Lake Avenue near the intersection with Orange Grove Boulevard.

He had been pursued there by Pasadena, Monrovia and California Highway Patrol officers, police said. Only Pasadena police discharged weapons during the incident.

Videos taken by two news services appear to show Youines holding a gun to his head and lurching forward in a battered white minivan towards officers, who instantly open fire.

Pasadena police Lt. Carlo Montiglio confirmed the suspect was killed. No police officers were injured.

CBS News reported that prior to the shooting Youines had driven the wrong way on the 210 Foothill freeway before exiting in Pasadena.

Youines might also have been connected to an earlier crash involving a sheriff’s deputy in Rosemead.

Deputies in South El Monte spotted a stolen vehicle at about 1:50 a.m. in the area of Rosemead Boulevard and Garvey Avenue, which triggered a four-minute pursuit that ended on the northbound San Gabriel River (605) Freeway at the San Bernardino (10) Freeway in Baldwin Park, according to a watch commander at the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department’s Temple station.

A deputy in a patrol vehicle, en route to assist in the pursuit, was involved in a two-vehicle crash at Rosemead Boulevard and Glendon Way in Rosemead, she said. The deputy suffered minor injuries and was taken to a hospital, where he was expected to be released sometime Saturday.

The motorist in the other vehicle suffered minor injuries and was not hospitalized.

The watch commander at the sheriff’s Temple station referred all inquiries to the Pasadena Police Department when asked if the suspect in South El Monte was the same man who was shot dead at the end of the pursuit in Pasadena.

Pasadena police spokesperson Commander Marcia Taglioretti said Saturday night she was not able to confirm any information with regards to Youines’s possible involvement in a carjacking earlier Saturday.

Taglioretti also said that detectives from the Pasadena Police Department’s Robbery / Homicide Unit responded to the crime scene early Saturday to start an immediate follow-up investigation.

She said that a separate investigation by the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s office will also take place.

Nearby stores, including a Walgreens across the street, remained closed Saturday morning.
