The Caltech Women’s Soccer team kicked off its Oregon road trip at Linfield University in a late evening matchup that came down to the wire.
A standout performance from Louise Marie Choi-Schattle (Barrington, R.I. / Barrington) produced two stellar goals to propel the Beavers to a 2-2 tie with the hosting Wildcats.
Caltech had an early threat in the second minute of the game with a shot by forward Jennifer Solgaard (Palo Alto, Calif. / Palo Alto). After the early opportunity both teams tightened up defensively, not allowing many gaps to open for the opposition. Caltech kept pressuring and created a series of chances with just under 13 minutes remaining in the first half, the first of which would come from the midfielder Ellie Yamada (South Pasadena, Calif. / South Pasadena) with a shot that just missed high. Choi-Schattle followed up with a pair of shots in short succession, the second of which found the back of the net off an assist bydefender Meher Banik (Forest City, Calif. / Aragon) for the first goal of the match..
The Wildcats responded quickly with a goal in the 38th minute from Rae Gerkin. This tied the match up 1-1 heading into halftime.
Both squads came out blazing in the second half with Linfield firing a couple shots off early on, and a clutch save by Sophia Steven (Broomfield Colo. / Peak to Peak Charter) kept the game tied. The Beavers matched the early intensity with a goal in the sixth minute of the half as Choi-Schattle netted her second of the contest off an assist by Solgaard, regaining the lead at 2-1.
Caltech held on to the lead until the final seconds with an impressive showing by Steven, who stopped six of Linfield’s shots on goal.
The Beavers will continue their road trip as they match up against Willamette University on Sunday at 11 a.m. Follow along at gocaltech.com/coverage.
