The City has brought back its e-bike rebate program following a successful pilot last year. The initiative offers Pasadena Water and Power residential electric customers up to $1,000 to purchase new e-bikes from local shops.
PWP residential electric customers are eligible for a $500 rebate when buying a qualifying electric bicycle from a bike shop located in the City of Pasadena. Low-income residents enrolled in PWP’s income-qualified bill payment assistance program can receive an additional $500 bonus.
“Electric bicycles provide an environmentally conscious transportation solution that can minimize greenhouse gas emissions while reducing your overall carbon footprint,” the utility said.
To qualify, customers must purchase a new Class 1, 2, or 3 electric bicycle as defined by the California Department of Motor Vehicles. The California Department of Motor Vehicles handbook defines an electric bicycle as equipped with fully operable pedals and an electric motor of less than 750 watts.
Used e-bikes, scooters, mopeds, segways, conversion kits, and bicycles transferred from family members, gifted, or won as prizes do not qualify for the rebate.
Applicants must log into their Pasadena Water and Power account to apply for the rebate within 180 days of purchase. Required documentation includes a detailed sales receipt, photos of the e-bike and its serial number, and a signed Pasadena Water and Power E-bike Rebate Agreement Form.
The program limits rebates to two per Pasadena Water and Power residential electric account, and the rebate amount cannot exceed the e-bike’s cost. The primary owner must reside at the Pasadena Water and Power service address listed on the application.
Class 1 e-bikes provide pedal assistance up to 20 mph, Class 2 include throttle assistance up to 20 mph, and Class 3 offer pedal assistance up to 28 mph with a required speedometer.
Pasadena Water and Power said it will process approved rebates within 6 to 8 weeks. This program aims to promote environmentally conscious transportation and reduce carbon emissions in Pasadena.
