Pasadena’s Department of Public Works has successfully completed the first construction phase of the Avenue 64 Complete Street project, located at the intersection of Avenue 64 and Burleigh Drive, aimed at enhancing traffic flow and improving pedestrian safety in the area.
In a memorandum for the City Manager, Public Works Director Tony Olmos said Phase 1 focused on the eastern half of the Avenue 64 and Burleigh Drive intersection. It included the construction of a new northbound traffic alignment, updated intersection geometry, landscaping enhancements, sidewalks, curb and gutter installations, and storm drain improvements.
The project transitioned into Phase 2 on Saturday, beginning with a new traffic pattern on the intersection. During this phase, northbound traffic will be redirected to the newly constructed northbound alignment, while southbound traffic will maintain its current path. This shift will allow for a work zone between the two lanes of traffic, facilitating the construction of the roundabout’s center island and several splitter islands, along with essential storm drain, pavement, and curb and gutter elements.
A description on the City of Pasadena website said the various enhancements in the Avenue 64 Complete Street project include curb extensions at the Cheviotdale Drive intersection and landscape beautification measures. These improvements are designed to reduce pedestrian crossing times, enhance street lighting, and incorporate stormwater capture elements for environmental sustainability.
The project was earlier awarded to Axiom Group and is scheduled for completion in June 2024.
It is funded through various sources, including the Metro Measure R Mobility Improvement Program Grant, the Metropolitan Transportation Authority Multi-Year Subregional Program, and the Safe, Clean Water Program (Measure W).
